2020 BFMT Soybean Variety Trial Results

Our 2020 soybean variety trial evaluated 71 soybean varieties across Maturity groups 2-7. The MG 2, 3, 4, and 5 tests were planted on May 14. The MG 6, and 7 tests were planted on June 3.

These trials were planted at 110,000 ppa on 30-inch rows on a Cape Fear Fine Sandy Loam soil.

As much as the weather allowed, we harvested each test as it matured, to insure data quality.

The plots were sprayed once for worms, and twice for stink bugs. No fungicides or foliar fertilizers were applied.

In each test, varieties highlighted in green are statistically the same, meaning the differences in yield are likely attributable to factors other than variety, such as variability in soil fertility, or pockets of insect or disease pressure, across the area comprising the test.

We wish to thank the following for their support:
The Blackland Farm Managers Association, and Quality Equipment, LLC.

Derick Tetterton, for providing the land and numerous other resources needed to conduct this variety trial, and Todd Waters, Coastal Cotton Gin, for providing room for equipment storage and parking.

Participating seed companies and representatives.

Dr. Rachel Vann, NC State Extension Soybean Specialist, and Ryan Heiniger, NC State OVT Director, for the generous loan of equipment, manpower, inputs, and statistical analysis of data.

Michael Buffaloe, retired NC State Extension Soybean Program Technician, for coming out of retirement to harvest these plots.
